EDIT: (29 November 2008) I have several pieces like these now available in my Etsy shop. Let me know if you don't see anything you like. I'm open to doing custom orders.

A coworker of mine gave me a stack of used-up Starbucks gift cards that she had been saving with the intent to find a place to recycle them. After having no luck, she offered them to me, thinking I could do something crafty with them. Well, I did.

These were a going away present for a different coworker who transferred to another store. I cut out the logos from three gift cards, sanded them into circles, used an emery board to smooth the edges and a nail to make a small hole. Two I attached to earring hoops, and one I turned into a matching necklace, together with coffee bean beads and those stopper beads from guitar strings, strung on fishing line. She loved them. I also made a pair of earrings for my manager.

Inspired by these, I cut up another card into squares, filed down the corners and made a bracelet. The strip left over, I dipped into boiling water and molded into a ring.

Then I made another bracelet (I forgot to take a before shot of the Valentine's Day gift card - yes, the squirrel is holding a heart)

Red Starbucks Bracelet

And another

Second Blue Starbucks Bracelet

And a couple more (I got both of these out of one card)

Now what else can I do with these...

I've got some other ideas. I suppose we'll just have to see what transpires...

make more and sell them
knitphomaniac at 2008-05-30 23:21 (UTC) (Link)
Perhaps. The bracelets at least don't have the logo, so no worries about copyright infringement.

Thanks! I do a little bit of everything. I mostly stick to knitting, but like to try my hand at lots of crafts, some successfully, others not so much.

These are GREAT--can you bring any you want to sell to next week's SnB? Especially the bracelet.

Okay. I have no idea what they're worth though. What would you pay for one?

They are extraordinary!!! I never saw those cards before (then again I don't get much of a chance going to Starbucks, there being none where I live!!)

I like what you did with them, one would never guess what they were originally!!!! Keep the imagination going!!!!

I'm a barista at a Sbux in New York! I was so excited to stumble upon your blog (via Craft Magazine) I've been looking for another barista blog, and I'm an avid sock knitter too!!! Let me know if you ever venture east!!
knitphomaniac at 2008-06-04 04:08 (UTC) (Link)
So there are at least two of us. Do you wear hand-knit socks to work everyday too?

I have family in NJ and will probably be going up to visit (with a day trip to Rhinebeck, NY *wink wink*) in October.

I got a Starbucks card for my birthday, and remember thinking how beautiful it was every time I pulled it out of my wallet. If only I had seen this post before I pitched it!

Great job.

I love this idea! I picked up some gift cards at the mall yesterday- Old Navy, Victoria's Secret, Target... I can't wait until I have some time to play with them.
